AI Website Builders vs WordPress: 30-Second Site, But Where’s the Gap?

After my last article went out, a factory owner messaged me privately: “Everything you said about Schema and AI search — I agree with. But yesterday I saw an ad for an AI website builder — 30 seconds to generate a site, only twenty-something yuan a month. So why should I spend thousands to have you build with WordPress?”

I’m very familiar with this question. It’s not just clients asking — I’ve seriously thought about it myself: will AI website builders eventually do my job?

Earlier this year, I spent two weeks doing research, going through every major AI website builder one by one. The conclusion: AI website builders are genuinely strong at “quickly producing a decent-looking site,” but the gap with WordPress in several key dimensions won’t be closed anytime soon. Not because the technology isn’t there, but because these gaps are fundamentally business model problems.

Let me share my core findings.

What Does “30-Second Site” Actually Produce?

Let’s be fair. AI website builders aren’t scams — they can genuinely do quite a lot.

I tested Durable, Wix AI, Hostinger AI, and other major ones. Enter your company name and industry, and in 30 seconds to a few minutes, it generates a complete website — homepage, About Us, Services, Contact, with auto-matched images, responsive mobile layout, and even SEO titles and meta descriptions written for you.

Durable is the fastest — literally 30 seconds. Wix AI can produce a quite polished site in half a day. Guandayun (a Chinese foreign trade-focused AI builder) offers auto-translation into 50 languages, 3,500+ templates, from generation to launch in one day.

If you just need “a website to exist,” AI website builders are perfectly adequate. The pricing is genuinely cheap too — Hostinger AI starts as low as ¥21/month, Guandayun from ¥238/year.

The problem is: “having a website” and “having a website that customers can find” are two different things.

In my previous article, I shared a data point: 51% of B2B procurement starts with AI tools. If your website lacks Schema structured data and llms.txt index files, AI struggles to understand what kind of company you are.

So can AI website builders do these? I checked each one, and found they need to be categorized — the results were completely different from what I initially expected.

The Real Gap Is Where You Can’t See It on the Surface

First, we need to clarify something: AI website builders aren’t all the same.

After testing them all, I found they fall into two categories:

TypeExamplesCharacteristics
All-in-one SaaSWix, Webflow, FramerFull-featured, already supports Schema and llms.txt in 2026
Minimalist AI generatorsDurable, Mixo, Jimdo Dolphin30-second site generation, but almost no deep SEO control

Take Wix — in 2026, it can already auto-generate Schema markup and llms.txt files, and even has a built-in AI visibility monitoring panel. Webflow and Framer also support adding JSON-LD structured data via Custom Code. So the claim that “AI website builders can’t do Schema” is no longer accurate as of 2026.

But here’s the thing: supporting something and being able to control it well are two different things.

CapabilityMinimalist AI GeneratorsAll-in-one SaaSWordPress
Auto Schema generationNoYes, partially autoYes, plugin deep control
Item-by-item Schema fixingNoNo, global toggle onlyYes, SureRank item-by-item
llms.txtNoYes, Wix/Webflow supportYes, fully customizable
301 redirectsNoYesYes
Canonical URLNoYesYes
Multilingual SEO (hreflang)NoPartial supportYes, fine-grained control
Core Web Vitals optimizationNoBasicYes, tunable to the extreme

My own website previously had 20+ incomplete Schema markings. Using the SureRank plugin, I detected and fixed them one by one — a certain page was missing company type markup, a certain product was missing price range — each could be precisely located and corrected. After fixing them, Google Search Console started showing rich result display data.

This kind of item-by-item control is something no AI website builder can currently do. Wix can auto-generate Schema for you, but what it gives you is a global toggle — all on or all off. A Schema error on one specific page? On Wix, you can’t fix just that one item.

This isn’t because the technology can’t do it — it’s dictated by business logic. All-in-one SaaS platforms are indeed opening up SEO features, but the degree of openness is limited by their platform lock-in strategy: the more they open up, the more likely you are to leave, so they only open up to “good enough” — never to “fully controllable.”

Plugin Ecosystem: 200 Apps vs 72,000 Plugins

This numerical gap might be bigger than you imagine.

AI website builders’ app stores max out at around 200 apps. WordPress’s plugin ecosystem has 60,000+ free plugins, 12,000+ paid plugins, with 2.5 billion total historical downloads. 90% of the essential features for foreign trade website building — inquiry forms, multilingual switching, SEO optimization, security, site acceleration — all have mature plugin coverage on WordPress.

This doesn’t mean more plugins is always better. WordPress has its risks — 22% of plugins haven’t been updated in over 2 years, and 97% of security vulnerabilities come from plugins and themes. But at least you have the choice. On AI website builders, if the platform doesn’t offer a feature, there’s nothing you can do to add it yourself.

Here’s an example foreign trade owners care about most: a floating WhatsApp button. Most AI website builders don’t support this feature. On WordPress, it’s a free plugin — 30 seconds, done. Another example: bulk product import/export — foreign trade factories often have hundreds of SKUs. AI website builders only let you add them one by one manually. WordPress with WooCommerce’s CSV import handles them all at once.

Is the Monthly Fee Really That Cheap? Let’s Calculate a 3-Year Total

Many people are attracted by AI website builders’ “low monthly fee.” But there’s a hidden number — research found that nearly half of users underestimate their total monthly cost by about 40%.

Hidden CostExplanation
Domain renewalFree first year, ¥100-300/year after
Transactional emailsExtra charges after quota exceeded
Advanced analyticsDeeper reports require plan upgrade
Storage and bandwidthMore media triggers upgrade
Paid appsReviews, shipping, subscriptions cost extra

Calculate the 3-year total cost, and the picture changes:

Solution3-Year Total Cost
Hostinger AI¥756-1,800
Guandayun AI¥720-3,600
Wix AI¥4,320-40,680
WordPress (self-built)¥1,260-6,480

Looks like AI website builders are still cheaper? But there’s one more cost not yet calculated — migration cost.

If you’ve been running on an AI website platform for 18 months, your business has grown, and you discover you need Schema, deep SEO optimization, fine multilingual control — and you want to migrate to WordPress. The migration itself plus content restructuring, URL redirects, and SEO recovery period will cost ¥4,000-8,000 combined. If you’d started with WordPress from the beginning, this money would be saved.

If your website just sits there without needing to generate leads, AI website builders’ monthly fee is indeed cost-effective. But if you expect this website to help you get inquiries, the hidden long-term costs far exceed the money saved upfront.

It’s like the difference between renting and buying a home. AI website builders are renting — the landlord can raise rent anytime, you can’t make major renovations, and when you move out, you can’t take anything with you. WordPress is buying — higher upfront investment, but the house is yours, and you can modify it however you want.

Is Your Website Really “Yours”?

The last gap is one many people don’t think about — data ownership.

On AI website builders, your website data lives on the platform’s servers. Wix’s code is the hardest to export. Durable’s migration process is extremely cumbersome. If the platform gets acquired, shuts down, or changes its pricing strategy one day, your website could disappear overnight.

WordPress is open source. Your files, database, and all your code live on your own hosting. Want to switch hosts? Standard migration tools, done in 30 minutes. WordPress getting acquired and shut down? That doesn’t exist — it’s a community-maintained open source project, with 835 million websites using it, accounting for 43.5% of the entire internet.

This gap is even more critical in foreign trade scenarios. Your website faces global customers — stability is the baseline. If a platform changes a rule today, your overseas customers might not be able to access your site tomorrow.

Who Should Use AI Website Builders, and Who Should Use WordPress?

I’m not saying AI website builders are useless. They have their appropriate use cases:

When AI website builders are a good fit:

  • You only need a “business card website” — as long as it opens, it’s fine
  • You don’t care about Google rankings or AI search recommendations
  • You have few products (10-30), don’t need multilingual
  • Your budget is extremely low, tens of yuan per month is the ceiling
  • Domestic display website, not for going global

When WordPress is the right choice:

  • You want to acquire customers through Google or AI search
  • You need multilingual (3+ language markets)
  • You have many products, potentially growing
  • You need inquiry forms + WhatsApp + CRM
  • You care about data security and don’t want to be locked in by a platform
  • You want your website to grow long-term, not use-and-toss

Use the simplest standard to judge: if your expectation for the website is “just having one is enough,” choose an AI website builder; if you want the website to help you get customers, choose WordPress.

Back to the factory owner’s question from the beginning. AI website builders produce a site in 30 seconds with a monthly fee of twenty-something yuan — these are all true. All-in-one platforms like Wix do indeed support Schema and llms.txt now. But a site built in 30 seconds has Schema that can only be toggled globally, not fixed item by item; a plugin ecosystem of only 200; and your data sits on someone else’s server. These gaps are also real.

It’s not that AI website building is bad — it’s that its positioning doesn’t match what foreign trade factories need. Your competitor uses an AI website builder for twenty yuan a month; you use WordPress website building for a one-time investment of three thousand-something — half a year later, when their Schema has issues they can only wait for a platform update, while you can fix every field yourself; when they want to add an inquiry feature and find the platform doesn’t support it, you install a plugin in 30 seconds. That gap can’t be explained by a twenty-yuan monthly fee.

In the next article, I’ll talk about another question everyone cares about — how much does a foreign trade website actually cost? From ¥3,980 to ¥15,800, where does the difference lie, and what does the money buy? I’ll break this open from my own cost structure, far more specific than those generic “website price range” articles out there.
